JUST THE FACTS:

  • Miniature Schnauzers are a member of the “Terrier” family although they were not bred in Great Britain, Scotland, or Ireland-as all the other terriers were.
  •  Unique as they were bred in Germany in the late 1800’s with pairing of Affenpinchers and poodles.
  • Working class of dogs; bred for ridding of rodents on farms.as well as palaces. They are named for a whiskered snout.
  • Known for being sweet, friendly, loyal, intelligent, eager to please, stubborn, strong-willed, feisty, entertaining, family oriented and protective.
  • There are three sizes recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Miniature Schnauzer aka “Zwergschnauzer”

Ht.: 12-14” @ shoulder, Wt. 10-20#; lifespan 10-12 yrs.      

Standard Standard aka “Mittelschnauzer”

Ht.:. 17.5-19.4”@ shoulder, Wt. 30-50# lifespan 13-15 yrs. 

Giant Schnauzer aka “Riesenschnauzer”

H.t: 23-38” @shoulder, Wt. 80-100#, lifespan 12-15 yrs.

****There are also toy and tea cup sizes but those are not recognized by the AKC standards for the breed.

  • A Miniature Schnauzer is a loyal and protective sturdy little dog.
  • They have “hair” rather than “fur” and are tolerated well by people with allergies.
  • They do not shed and need routine grooming every four to six weeks. The breed comes in a.) Coarse-wiry and wavy thick coat and b.) silky-a softer, smoother coat. They are known for their beard, mustaxsche, and eyebrows as well as a skirt
  • Ears are natural unless cropped.
